I’ve never been a fan of TV series that require major time and energy commitments, and gravitate towards shows with standalone episodes that play around with philosophical ideas. The following is a list of episodes and shows that I’d never hesitate to recommend to any fellow seekers (in no particular order).
The Midnight Gospel
- E08: Mouse of Silver (Guest starring Deneen Fendig)
If you are going to watch one episode from this list…. this should be it. This is the most profound and truly transforming 40 minutes of TV i’ve ever experienced and is sure to touch seasoned psychonauts and reluctant parents alike. The episode is an animated real-life conversation between Clancy (Duncan Trussel) and Deneen Fendig -Trussel’s mother who died from cancer 3 weeks later – displaying a heart wrenching yet spiritually nourishing dialogue on the nature of life, death, grief, and the enduring power of love.
- E03: Hunters Without a Home (Guest starring Damien Echols)
Clancy interviews Damien Echols about topics such as Buddhism, ritual, esoteric traditions, and ceremonial magik in this information-dense and mind-blowing episode.
Rick and Morty
- S2E02: Mortynight Run
A classic episode featuring all the hallmarks of “Rick & Morty”, including absurd parallel universes, Rick flexing the total autonomy of his consciousness from telepathic entities, and the famous “Roy” VR game.
- S2E06: The Ricks Must Be Crazy
Rick has to visit a small microverse he built inside his car battery when his car doesnt turn on, only to find a scientist within his battery’s miniverse has created a new source of energy. A great exploration of multi-leveled multiverses.
- S4E06: Never Ricking Morty
This meta-episode literalizes literary plots as Rick and morty try to escape from a “Story Train”… playing with and exploring the hermeneutical nature of experience.
Undone
The whole 8 episode series can be watched like a movie.
“Undone” explores the experience of a girl unwillingly being called on to develop shamanic powers of time travel… all the while examining the implications of non-ordinary states of consciousness for mental illness.
Kora
season 1 episode 12
